Calcium citrate and Zinc picolinate: interaction, severity and spacing
Calcium citrate and Zinc picolinate interact because calcium and zinc compete for overlapping intestinal transport pathways, so high doses of one reduce absorption of the other. Take them 2 hours apart. Moderate risk.
The interaction in detail
| Pair | Calcium citrate and Zinc picolinate |
|---|---|
| Type | Nutrient interaction |
| Severity | Moderate |
| Required spacing | 2 hours minimum |
| Onset | At the time of dosing |
Mechanism
Calcium and zinc compete for overlapping intestinal transport pathways, so high doses of one reduce absorption of the other.
What to do
Space calcium and zinc by at least 2 hours, and keep zinc at or below 40 mg per day.
How to fit both into one day
Calcium absorbs better with food and in doses at or below 500 mg. Take it with vitamin D3, and separate it from iron, zinc and thyroid medication.
Zinc taken with food reduces nausea but phytates block it, so use a chelated form. Sustain high doses only alongside copper.
Putting Calcium citrate in the midday and Zinc picolinate in the evening satisfies the 2-hour separation without disrupting either one's absorption window.
